What’s Your Theme Song?

According to Merriam-Webster, a theme song is a song or melody strongly associated with someone or something. In many ways, it tells a story.

Isaac Hayes’ “Theme from Shaft” made one thing clear: John Shaft was going to accomplish his purpose—on his own terms. Though the character was worldly, there’s a spiritual truth hidden there: God’s purposes prevail, even when the enemy intends harm.

“He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel.” — Genesis 3:15

“You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.” — Genesis 50:20

Then there’s Rocky. “Gonna Fly Now” isn’t just a movie anthem—it’s the soundtrack of perseverance. A small-time fighter gets an impossible opportunity, and through discipline, grit, and endurance, rises to the moment. Hard work matters—but God’s grace empowers every step.

“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13

“With God all things are possible.” — Mark 10:27

Those were my go-to songs back in the day—one rich with rhythm and resolve, the other visually etched into memory as Rocky climbed those 72 steps in Philadelphia and lifted his arms in victory.

Shaft had a theme song.
Rocky had a theme song.
And I have one too.

“You’ve Got a Friend” — Carole King (popularized by James Taylor)

This song captures the essence of who I am and why I exist. It speaks to unwavering support, loyalty, and presence—no matter the season.

“Winter, spring, summer, or fall… all you’ve got to do is call.”

It reminds us that when the world feels cold or unkind, there is still refuge in genuine love and connection. That message aligns deeply with my calling.

“Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2

“The God of all comfort… comforts us so we may comfort others.” — 2 Corinthians 1:3–4

I chose this song because it embodies the purpose of my life: to serve, encourage, and stand with those who need help. That calling gave birth to STOPS.

My experiences have exposed me to people who feel unseen, devalued, hopeless, and treated as less than. That reality ignited a burning in my soul to love, care for, and serve others. It’s my culture, my mandate, and my pleasure.

God has gifted me with a deep commitment to encourage the hurting—whether their pain is quiet or overwhelming. God willing, I will spend the rest of my life helping people feel less broken.

“When David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried.”— Acts 13:36

So I want you to know this: you’ve got a friend—and I’ve got your back.

Now I ask you:
What’s your theme song—and why? 🎶💛
